This September, the fun-loving, award-winning, Silver Spring, MD-based Capital Accord Chorus celebrates its “Sweet 16th” year as a women’s a cappella barbershop chorus and 10th year being directed by Certified Director Sherry Stanton, a resident of Rockville, MD.

Under Stanton’s leadership, the chorus has twice placed second in the Small Chorus division of the Sweet Adelines International(SAI) Region 19 competition - first in 2007 and again April 30 of this year. At this year’s event, the chorus also tied with the Valley Forge (PA) Chorus for the “Most Improved” chorus award. Region 19 includes choruses and quartets from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Lustre Quartet, in which Capital Accordian tenor Kate Morrical sings, won the quartet competition and will be competing in October at the SAI International Convention in Houston, TX.

The Capital Accord Chorus also sings at events in the Washington, DC metropolitan area from the Fenton Street Market and Magical Montgomery festivals in Silver Spring, MD to the Renwick Gallery, U.S. Botanic Garden, and Willard Intercontinental hotel for the holiday season, as well as at retirement homes, schools, and other locations throughout the year. On August 28, the chorus sang the National Anthem at the Baltimore Orioles/New York Yankees baseball game at Camden Yards in Baltimore. In November, the chorus begins its free 6-week “Sing for the Holidays” program for women who would like to sing with the group, culminating in several holiday performances.

“Each week I pinch myself to think of how far we have come and what a great sound we have developed,” said Stanton, whose own quartet, Escapade, was awarded second place in the Region 14 competition earlier in April in North Carolina. Escapade is also competing in the International Competition in October.

The Capital Accord Chorus is a women's chorus that performs four-part a cappella harmony jazz, pop, standards, and show tunes. The chorus, which includes 25 women from throughout the DC metro area rehearses during the school year at Sligo Middle School in Silver Spring and rehearsed this summer at the Classic Residence retirement community in Chevy Chase from June through August. Interested women are welcome to sing with the chorus at a rehearsal to learn more about becoming a member. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 10 p.m. For more information about the Capital Accord Chorus, please visit the website at http://www.CapitalAccord.org or call 301-585-2422.
