Summit Series for Families (http://www.summitseriesforfamilies.com), a community of parents, educators and authors brought together in conversation around issues that affect today’s families, has announced its first online film screening. Scheduled for the week of September 19th 2011, members of the site will have access for 5 days to view the film, Consuming Kids, which shows how American children have become one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. The film illustrates just how far corporate marketers will go to influence them.
Viewers are invited to submit feedback regarding the film by email to be included in a roundup of comments on the site. An online discussion will follow throughout the week of September 26th .
“In the past, we’ve scheduled online events with authors to bring together parents, caregivers and educators in a format that is both easy to attend and to access,” says Julia Kennedy, who developed the first series of interviews in 2009. “This film is another opportunity to develop conversations around issues that are important to today’s families. Our children are bombarded with marketing messages all day long, and as parents, we need to be aware of the impact of these messages on our kids. "
Instructions for accessing the film will be emailed to all members of the online community several days before the event. Joining the site and participating in online discussions is free. Past events have included live interviews with authors of various parenting books, including Lenore Skenazy of Free Range Kids, Diane Levin of So Sexy So Soon, and David Elkind, of The Power of Play.
