The National Institute for Prevention of Workplace Violence, Inc. announced that it has released a new version of The NIX Model for Managing Violence Prevention. The NIX Model is a standard for addressing violence prevention that was first published in the last 90's. The new model has been updated to reflect new emerging approaches to workplace violence prevention coupled with tried and true' methodologies and the emerging new approach by OSHA. The new motto that OSHA is adapting is Plan, Prevent and Protect' and they are focusing on businesses creating Injury and Illness Prevention Programs (IIPP) to proactively address known hazards to protect their employees. The NIX Model for Managing Violence Prevention encompasses seven steps to effectively manage efforts to prevention workplace violence. These steps include the following:
1. Developing a comprehensive plan to implement a workplace violence prevention program that a senior member of management is charged with responsibility to implement.
2. Identifying your organizations risks and vulnerabilities.
3. Program development driven by a multiple function team that typically involves Security, Human Resources, Safety, Occupational Health, Legal and Operations, at minimum.
4. Implementation of effective Security policies, procedures and processes focused on prevention of violence and rapid response by law enforcement.
5. Implementation of effective Human Resources policies, procedures and processes that include well thought out threat management approaches.
6. Implementation of an effective crisis management and response plan that integrates with the organizations' greater business continuity and resiliency plan.
7. Focus on developing a workplace environment and culture that fosters respectful treatment of employees, customers, visitors and contractors in all transactions.
