Everyone complains about the failures of our system of education, but the required wisdom necessary to combat these problems has been absent in many cases.

A new book is confronting the question of how much individual freedom we are willing to sacrifice to ensure domestic tranquility, exploring the potential for social and cultural conformity in the name of public good.

In Dormant Enhancement, author Jack Richards combines a premise that is both fictional and futuristic with the familiar concerns of the current education system, confronting questions about what it might mean to have government-controlled education. The book chronicles the plight of a widowed, self-reliant mother and her two sons as they move to the United States in 2024, touching on her issues with required conformity and her child’s forced entry into a compulsory education system. In these new schools, the students are conditioned to become “ideal” citizens, brainwashed and so that they may avoid negative influences. The fight to keep her son out of the system leads her on a dangerous adventure.

“Everyone complains about the failures of our system of education, but the required wisdom necessary to combat these problems has been absent in many cases,” says Richards. “My fear that a system may arise that would rob us of our basic freedoms stimulated me to take a closer look at the danger of what we may become.”

With decades of experience as an educator, Richards’ background led him to the observations and conclusions that influence the behavior of the protagonist. His goal is for readers to see potential dangers to our social and psychological wellbeing when we accept anything that simply makes things easier and more convenient.

“The examination of our educational system sets before the reader these choices,” says Richards. “It requires that judgments be made about our ability to resist the imposition of social and cultural uniformity.”
