Dick Figures has emerged as the number one Animated Show on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/shows) generating over 10 million views in the month of August. The show is produced by Six Point Harness and distributed by Mondo Media on its Mondo Mini Shows YouTube channel. Written, directed and voiced by Ed Skudder and Zack Keller, the series features two dysfunctional friends who make up for what they lack in smarts and sex appeal with a really long string of bad decisions, all set to a contemporary dubstep sound track. To date, the series has 20 X 2.5 minute episodes live with a third 10-episode season scheduled to launch on Sept 22nd.
John Evershed, CEO of Mondo Media observes that “a new TV episode of South Park typically attracts 3 million US viewers and is consistently ranked in the top 10 most-viewed cable shows. Dick Figures is already doing 10 million views per month (worldwide) and is on a trajectory that will surpass our first hit online series Happy Tree Friends. Happy Tree Friends continues to generate in excess of 20 million views per month. I think it’s one of the better kept secrets how large of an audience the most popular episodic properties on YouTube are attracting on a month to month basis.”
According to Mondo Media’s Executive Producer Aaron Simpson, “It’s also surprising how much of Dick Figures’ audience is coming from mobile devices. Already, a typical episode gets almost 20% of its views from mobile on YouTube. This is much faster and more substantial than we would have predicted and video consumption on mobile is still in its early stages.”
The other major factor driving Dick Figures’ viewership is that animation appeals to a global audience. Mondo Media is translating Dick Figures into German and Spanish and posting the translated videos on its Germondo and MundoMondo YouTube channels. Evershed predicts that “Dick Figures’ foreign viewership will account for an additional 15% - 30% of our ad revenue on YouTube in 2012.”
