“First, we were grateful we got out alive,” claims Shine, now wife of Carl and president of eMazzanti Technologies. “Second, our dreams of grandeur as we started our new computer support business seemed as dark as the smoke and ash rising from the destruction at ground zero. But we still found a way to succeed.”
Helping Hand Won Clients
Carl and Jennifer indeed found a way to grow their new business regardless of how it started out and regardless of how uncertain the future appeared. eMazzanti Technologies immediately found ways to survive by helping clients. For example, it helped them communicate by using its own Internet access in its offices in Hoboken, N.J., just across the Hudson River. Those efforts paid off. Although eMazzanti struggled, it eventually won more customers through referrals from its original handful of clients.
"We were in Tribeca when the second tower went,” said Carl. “The building we were in was brick and a red mist filled the area. We lost lights and the Internet. I remember finally getting back into Hoboken and having washing stations to rinse off our bodies. It was like a hazmat station and you could tell the people who were close to the [towers] because their hair was covered with concrete.”
Thrust into the worst possible circumstances, Carl and Jennifer said they learned overnight that customers responded to value and the ability to solve their problems. That soon became the essence of the company's mission statement and it made them strong during a difficult time.
10 Years Later: 400 Customers and Inc. 5000 Spot
