Jim McGovern, in his new book, invites readers to revisit the remnants of one of the most tumultuous events in the history of the United States. A striking visual journey, Dust Messages depicts in photographs what happened on September 11, 2001.
The collection of images will challenge readers to look beyond statistical data and journalistic accounts of that fateful day and, instead, see it as a moment of personal loss, a confounding instance of grief and helplessness. “Dust Messages” is more than a series of photographs that feature entanglements of metal and concrete reduced to rubble; it is a harrowing glimpse into the individual stories that further intensify the consequence of the situation. Jim McGovern preserved a significant moment of history but most of all he has captured in pictures the pain, shock and anger that resonate beyond the concrete ruins and perhaps from the heart of the viewer.
Dust Messages is a stirring and painful photographic journey through one of the darkest days of American history. But more than a historical account, it is a profound visual experience that readers should not miss.
This book will be featured at the 2011 New England Library Association Book Exhibit in Burlington, Vermont, on October 2 to 4, 2011. And in 2011 Pennsylvania Library Association Book Exhibit in State College, PA, on October 2 to 5, 2011.
