Dr. Harry M. Anderson’s book, From an Art to a Science of Psychoanalysis (Trafford Publishing), is the scientifically testable result of original scientific clinical researches. According to Anderson, it is "something that the critics of analysis have long requested and the profession has had difficulty providing”.

During his medical training, he was inspired by the apolitical curiosity, courage and determination of the scientists he encountered, and he carried their example into his psychoanalytic career. As his scientific journey proceeded, he was much impressed with its course. None of his researches were planned, but retrospective studies revealed that each had followed naturally upon the one before. They had settled in succession in the curious part of his mind, and subtly pulled the rest of it with them.

Over a period of 30 years, new investigative methods allowed Anderson to work exclusively with objectively-perceived data and process it by the exclusive use of his conscious cognitive mental functions. Existing concepts were examined for concrete definability and new ones were developed as needed. Untested principles were examined for predictive capability and many were replaced with new discoveries. Then validated theories of the symptoms encountered in psychoanalysis, the psychotherapies, and the world beyond the clinic, materialized from the effort.
