Clay Westfall’s autobiography, My Navy: The Voyage of a Submarine Cook, published by AuthorHouse, follows him on his journey from a small town in Alabama to a U.S. Navy submarine. Readers will be given a glimpse into the many adventures in his 22 year career in the Navy as a submarine cook.
“Everyone on board a United States Navy Nuclear Submarine has to qualify submarines. Until you are qualified in submarines, your life sucks. As a nub, you had very few privileges aboard ship. No matter what your rank is, if you are sitting in the crews mess watching a movie, any qualified person can ask you to get up and let him sit in your seat. A qualified person can also take your place in the chow line. If you are doing anything recreational, qualified people will ask you why you are not studying instead. It just sucks to be a nub,” Clay Westfall.
Westfall’s early days in his military career were spent struggling through the gauntlet of qualifications and trying to fit in with a group of men who were unorthodox to say the least. They took him into their group and put him through the most amazing adventures of his life, including bar room brawls, firing weapons in a parking lot in Virginia and – in true sailor fashion – a few drunken escapades.
Westfall’s stories only become more peculiar, wild and exciting throughout the book. His life’s story is an outrageous and entertaining experience which anyone with military experience will find nostalgic, remarkable and maybe a bit too familiar.
