Dead Church Walking brings fresh ideas to put churches on the road to recovery.

Dead Church Walking

For decades, Jimmy has been studying like a scholar and getting his hands dirty like a saint. He loves the Church, and because of that love, he is not willing to accept her as she is.

Every year more than 4000 churches close their doors compared to just over 1000 new church starts. Every year 2.7 million church members fall into inactivity. (Source: Dr. Richard J. Krejcir, Schaeffer Institute). It’s a tumultuous time for the bride of Christ.

In 'Dead Church Walking' (Biblica Publishing, paper, $15.99 ISBN 978-1606571262), author Jimmy Dorrell offers fresh and eye-opening biblical and social principles for churches who want to do more than merely survive or fade from existence. With clear suggestions for those willing to embrace change, churches will discover how to become a body of believers that proclaims God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

While there are no easy fixes, Dorrell addresses underlying symptoms of broken models that are leading to the demise of many churches. He calls attention to unhealthy patterns that must be reformed, leadership issues, theological underpinnings, and many new ideas to help anemic churches find new vitality. Dead Church Walking is hopeful and encouraging, bringing fresh ideas to ignite the fire of churches and put them on the road to recovery.

“Jimmy Dorrell is one of the best pastors on the planet. His ragamuffin congregation at Church Under the Bridge is one of the clearest glimpses of the kingdom I’ve ever seen. For decades, Jimmy has been studying like a scholar and getting his hands dirty like a saint. He loves the church, and because of that love, he is not willing to accept her as she is. May this book move us all a little closer to the church we dream of,” said Shane Claiborne, activist, and author of Jesus for President.

Jimmy and Janet Dorrell moved into a lower income neighborhood in Waco, TX in 1977. They founded Church Under the Bridge and Mission Waco in 1992 and have been leading these innovative ministries ever since. Jimmy has a DMin from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Church in Renewal for Mission. His passion is to motivate churches toward a more holistic missional ecclesiology that offers new life for struggling churches in America. He and his wife have four children and three grandchildren.
