We wanted to make Aww, Eggplant!? easy enough for anyone to pick up and play but provide enough depth and variety to keep our players coming back for more.

A trio of graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center released their first iPhone game, Aww, Eggplant!?, to the App Store. Players score points by skewering screaming vegetables as they arc across their iPhone screen, earning rewards for consecutive skewers and stabbing multiple vegetables in one shot. However, amongst the good veggies are eggplants, which can take a healthy bite out of the player's score.
In addition to simple, one-touch controls, Aww, Eggplant!? features a cute, humorous aesthetic, complete with pirates, undead produce, and a soundtrack composed and performed by the team's sound designer - with only his voice. Multiple mini-games give players new challenges, such as hitting a specific kind of vegetable or avoiding misses for as long as possible. The game's ever-increasing difficulty challenges players to strive for higher scores, and they can compete with their friends through Apple's Game Center, the iPhone's social gaming hub.
Aww, Eggplant!?'s masterminds developed the game in their free time after work. The idea began in their game design course last spring. "We had so much fun making it that we wanted to see it all the way through to the App Store," explains Alex Kowalski, the artist behind the game's vibrant veggies.
Early response to the game has been very positive. IGN calls the game "charming" and notes the value of the game's "quirky sense of humor," while mobile app blog Appmodo calls Aww, Eggplant!? a "masterpiece" which is "guaranteed to satisfy."
Anthony Palma, the team's gameplay programmer, attributes the game's reception to its broad appeal and classic aim-for-the-high-score objectives. "We wanted to make Aww, Eggplant!? easy enough for anyone to pick up and play but provide enough depth and variety to keep our players coming back for more."
Aww, Eggplant!? is now available on the App Store for $0.99. For those who like to try before they buy, a free version is also available.
