Transfer of Both Highly Confidential Data and Business-Critical Applications in Short Timeframes Key Considerations

Consonus recently completed a successful data center relocation for High Point Regional Health System (HPRHS), a large healthcare system in North Carolina. The move took place after months of meticulous planning to ensure that confidential patient data and business-critical systems were transferred safely, securely, and with minimal downtime.

“Planning and execution of the move has been flawless,” said Thomas Northup, manager of Technology Infrastructure for HPRHS. “Consonus helped us through the entire process, defining the current environment and the desired future state, as well as helping design the path to migrate from one to the other. For each of the 8 move events, specific “day of move” plans were created jointly with application and infrastructure staff to ensure that everything happened as planned, in the timeframe needed, and with minimal disruption. The work has been so successful, we’ve asked Consonus to move a final set of applications, hosted by the hospital, for an independent practice. Consonus was right — the more you plan, the easier the actual move is!”

The impetus for the data center relocation came when HPRHS realized they could not accommodate the forecasted annual growth rate of 15% for both servers and storage at their current data center locations. For months, Consonus worked with HPRHS to carefully strategize and map a data center relocation plan that could accommodate rigorous requirements that involved data protection, compliance and regulation, and accessibility — primary concerns for any healthcare organization. A detailed analysis of current and projected infrastructure capacity using Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools significantly shortened the planning process to four months – saving HPRHS $60,000 in preparation and consulting time. As a result of meticulous planning, Consonus was able to execute the actual move in eight segments, versus 14 that were originally budgeted.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for us to use our DCIM tool to shorten the planning process” said Bruce Cardos, Director of Consonus’ Project Management Office. “It is interesting to note that in a previous engagement, Consonus had helped HPRHS define the specifications that the new data center should meet through a detailed review and analysis of their current and planned application environments. HPRHS and Consonus have had a long relationship and we continue to work together to provide them ongoing value.”

High Point Regional Health System is a 400-bed trauma center located in the Triad area of North Carolina. Serving a population of approximately 475,000, HPRHS provides acute inpatient and various outpatient services to multiple counties throughout the state.
