This sequel to Gold, Silver and Guns focuses on Arizona in the 1890s as the territory struggles to become a state – a feat it won’t achieve until 1912. The era was ruled by industrial giants like Carnegie, Gould, Morgan and Rockefeller as railroads connecting New York to California revolutionize transportation. Against this backdrop, a German immigrant miner with success in silver and gold mining decides to leave his comfortable home to start a mammoth copper mine, riding on the tide of the metal’s expected popularity in electrification. A surprising personal discovery jumpstarts his need for a change.
Red Treasure follows Konrad Bruner’s story of determination as he battles the challenges of competition, flash floods and labor unrest in his remote copper mine. Financial disasters out of his control only serve to add to the risk he has taken on. Arson, romance, Mexican desperadoes and true-to-life challenges – including a railroad kidnapping — bring history to life. The novel captures the excitement as a businesswoman, ambitious young man, ranchers and miners follow their dreams and their hearts against the backdrop of Arizona’s early days.
This is the second novel for author George Smith, who is familiar with running a company. He has managed family owned firms as COO and CEO, participated in three company startups and worked for a Fortune 100 corporation. Smith has a master’s degree in mining geology from the University of Arizona and worked for Union Carbide’s Mining and Metals Division, working his way up to vice president/general manager of the company’s worldwide chromium and manganese business units.
