In “My Polish-American Mother” (published by AuthorHouse), Frances Lareau delivers both a touching memorial to her mother, Helen Lareau, and a thought-provoking analysis into the unique family dynamics of immigrant families.
Having discovered her mother’s “box of memories,” Lareau began the treasure-finding journey of piecing together her family’s history.
“World War II and the communist regime caused my grandparents to flee Poland, and they came to America with three of their four children to start life with new dreams,” says Lareau.
“After my grandmother died, my mother took on the role of matriarch of the family and was forced to focus and devote her life to the family. Her new role changed her life. Instead of focusing on herself, she had to take care of her elderly father, her mentally ill brother, and her son, my brother, who tried to stay at home as little as possible. I, an active tempestuous child, did not make life easier for mother.”
Lareau shows how her mother, who in addition to her at-home duties was a domestic worker outside of the home, dealt with tremendous stresses compounded by her battle with depression. Lareau notes that her mother never discussed her illness.
In researching and writing “My Polish-American Mother,” Lareau not only sought to narrate her family history but to understand the mother “who never spoke of her feelings.”
“I was determined to understand my mother, and I would eventually do this through the papers that were in that box,” says Lareau. “I examined and attentively read each of the papers, my quest being to search out who my mother really was and to try to build a bond with a woman who I lived with, but never really knew.”
