US Air Force will spend $2.6B on Global Hawk through FY2016

EJL Defense & Aerospace, a division of EJL Wireless Research LLC, announces the release of its US Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Market Analysis and Forecast, 1st Edition for FY2012-FY2016. “In terms of total UAV aircraft procured in the current budget cycle for FY2012-FY2016, AeroVironment captured the largest amount with 57% market share, due primarily to the full rate production status of the RQ-11B Raven,” says founder and President, Earl Lum.

The analysis presented in this report focuses on the procurement timing of UAVs for the US Air Force, Army, Navy/Marines and SOCOM and not actual scheduled delivery dates. “In terms of total potential contract revenues through FY2016, Northrop Grumman is expected to secure the largest portion with 55% of the $16.4 billion in aircraft-only revenues, followed by General Atomics with 20% and AeroVironment with 19%. Our analysis only focuses on the potential aircraft/payload revenues and does not include the impact of contract revenues from ground control stations, support and service maintenance of the UAVs,” says Lum.

“The market for UAVs in the US is shifting away from the initial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions to adding tactical attack capability to a wider portion of the existing and future UAV aircraft platforms. In addition, the focus on expendable micro-UAVs and mini-UAVs that perform both ISR and attack functions at the platoon level within the US Army is gaining momentum. Just seeing where the potential enemy combatant is located is no longer good enough for the Warfighter. The UAV systems must also allow for the Warfighter to engage and eliminate any threats.

In addition, we anticipate that demand for smaller and less costly UAV systems that perform both ISR and attack capabilities will drive new players into an already crowded and ultra-competitive environment” says Lum.
