Nutri-Med Logic Corp.: According to a recent study, presently about 34 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer's and same is expected to triple over the next 40 years. A recently published study suggests that diabetes, midlife high blood pressure, midlife obesity, depression, physical inactivity, smoking and poor education / mental inactivity are among the most important risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s.

Four of these risk factors: High blood pressure, Obesity, Depression and Diabetes have direct links to both stress and inflammation, two factors that are the target points of an Omega-3 diet.

The higher elevation of two inflammatory markers (TNF and IL-6) are implicated in Obesity, Hypertension and Diabetes.

IL-6 and TNF are both activated and/or their activities are increased via an inflammatory switch, as a manner of speak; this switch is called NF-kB.

If this switch is left on for longer period of time than necessary, it will either cause or contribute to chronic, degenerative and inflammatory diseases, such as Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Depression, etc. (1)

NF-kB is turned off and/or its activity is reduced with Cortisol (the stress hormone). Accordingly, if the switch (NF-kB) is turned off or possesses a reduced capacity, than normal, for longer period of time than necessary, then the body will be exposed to infectious and opportunistic diseases. (2)

Cortisol and NF-kB are key immune mechanisms. NF-kB is pro-inflammatory mechanism and cortisol is an anti-inflammatory mechanism. When both NF-kB and cortisol are properly regulated (Homeostasis), then the immune system will have the ability to self-regulate itself. However, if either one of the two misbehaves, then body will lose it homeostasis (ability to self-regulate itself) many age-related diseases manifest themselves.

Interestingly, diet plays an important role in the homeostasis or good behavior of Cortisol and NF-kB. Certain food are considered pro-inflammatory and others are considered anti-inflammatory; most notably Omega-6 and Omega-3.

Depending on the amount of intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids of Omega-6 and Omega-3; both of which are essential to the human body, the activities of NF-kB could be enhanced or moderated.

The human body is incapable of making either Omega-6 or Omega-3, thus, both are transported to the body through diet (food). Omega-6 is found in most foods but Omega-3 in cold-water fishes.

Omega-6 enhances inflammatory mechanism and Omega-3 anti-inflammatory mechanism. In another word, Omega-6 would enhance the activities of NF-kB and Omega-3 would moderate it. A more behaved NF-kB would result in a more behaved cortisol production.

Studies by the Department of Experimental Medicine and Oncology, University of Turin, Italy, suggests that NF-kB could be moderated by means of a suitable dietary ratio of Omega-3/Omega-6. (3)

Omega-3 has two important components: DHA and EPA. DHA is the precursor to Resolvin-D and EPA is precursor to Resolvin-E; both of which contribute to the resolution of inflammation. DHA is mainly used in the Nervous System and EPA in the cardiovascular system.

Resolution of inflammation contributes to the moderation of NF-kB and thus moderation of the Cortisol.

DHA of Omega-3 also moderates Corticotropin Release Factor, the parent to the stress hormone Cortisol.
