The Drug Awareness Committee, co-chaired by Mr. Lou Pappas and Mrs. Joyce Hart, in conjunction with Tulsa Youth and Community Affairs Committees are working together to bring to the community a day of games, exhibits and invaluable education for parents and kids regarding drug and alcohol use and abuse. Featured at the event will be a Drug Education Trailer with a drug paraphernalia exhibit to educate parents and teachers about the wide spread merchandizing and easy accessibility of drug paraphernalia in Oklahoma.
Events and activities include Drug Education Presentations geared towards kids and a special presentation by nationally recognized Certified Drug and Alcohol Intervention Specialist Holly Conklin CADC, CIS Founder and CEO of Angel Intervention at 11:00 am, for adults about how to spot drug use in adolescents and the importance of early intervention. There will be other drug education related videos for the kids as well as games and prizes.
The Mission of the Elks Drug Awareness Program is to promote constructive and cooperative approaches to the prevention of illicit substance abuse by the youth of the United States of America. This will be accomplished through proper education of students and parents, and by assisting scholastic institutions with programs and materials. The continued goals of the Tulsa Elks Lodge Drug Awareness Program includes, conducting conferences, workshops and training seminars to promote an understanding of substance abuse, the root causes and effective solutions. To provide visual and practical skills needed to transform decisions that lead to substance abuse, into restorative usefulness. To develop, collect and circulate important resources on substance abuse, including curriculum, manuals, articles and other materials needed to combat this widespread problem.
The Elks Lodge will celebrate National Red Ribbon Week in Oklahoma throughout the month of October and in January will participate in the Elks National Drug Awareness Essay Contest. On-going Drug Awareness Pamphlets, instruction through video programs and exhibits will be available with the Drug Awareness Trailer throughout the state.
