Nexusguard was invited to speak at the Internet Society (ISOC) seminar in Hong Kong, to share with its attendees their knowledge and experience on “Defending DDoS and advanced attacks on Critical Infrastructure.”
In the past year, DDoS attacks targeting critical infrastructure have grown more vigorous in terms of size and complexity. Governments, institutions, stock exchanges and nuclear plants have all fallen prey to large-scale attacks. The recent attack to Hong Kong has impacted its economy's reputation and well-being.
“DDoS attacks can slow down your website and eventually bring your website out-of-service. It brings collateral damage to network equipment and cause loss of reputation, customer confidence and business,” said Frank Tse, Research Manager at Nexusguard, a speaker at the event who also presented South Korea’s DDoS incident in 2009 as a case-in-point during the panel discussion.
According to a global survey conducted by Arbor Network- leading network security and research firm, size and frequency of DDoS attacks have had a “sharp escalation” in 2010. The largest reported attack size doubled year-over-year, to more than 100gbps. This is an amazing 1000% increase in attack size since the first report was published in 2005.
“As DDoS attack becomes increasingly available and in-the-cloud businesses gains popularity, we believe the attacks will become more frequent and vigorous, and will impact more industries than before.”
Frank also introduced common DDoS mitigation solutions in the event, including clean pipe services. “Clean Pipe services are ISP agnostic and designed to carry and filter attacks. In the event of attack, clean pipe specialist can filter the attack traffic and return the legitimated traffic to client’s server.”
