William Frank Smith, long-time lay minister and a volunteer adult education leader of the Roman Catholic church, has taken his own interest in the scripture and created a thought-provoking reading guide for the Bible’s New Testament in the hopes of “perhaps [stirring]-up enough interest to encourage more reading and study of these, the most important writings of our Christian faith.” Smith grew up with the more traditional view of scripture study, which consisted primarily of memorizing the word of God; however, he has branched out his study to the more contemporary biblical scholars, discussing their findings with fellow parishioners who were just as curious about the word of God.

Smith has broken down the book to discuss not only Canonicity and Lectionary writings, which are, respectively, the determination of the specific writings that are included in the Bible and the choice of the readings from the Bible that are read in churches each Sunday, but each book of the New Testament. The discussion of the books includes not only background information about the various books’ authors, but also the hypothesized reasons that the books were written as well as the audience for whom the books were intended. This work is suitable for individual reading and reference, as well instigating instigate a group discussion.

How Will We Know the Way? is part of the Left Coast™ Monograph series; the first two books in this series Catholic Church Milestones (the people and events that shaped the institutional Catholic Church) and Bread and Wine Blessed and Shared (the Eucharistic Rites of the Catholic Church) are also available. The author William Frank (Bill) Smith has worked in Roman Catholic parishes in Oregon and California for more than thirty years. Smith retired in 2007 and moved with his wife Barbara from California to Oregon. He is creating a series of monographs that reflect the many things he learned as he went about his ministerial work over the years.
