“Classes are heavy on practical skills and field-tested information that can be immediately applied to your home and lifestyle."
Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) September 19, 2011
For years, acclaimed survival instructor and author Tony Nester has taught people how to weather out a night in the wilds with just a knife and the clothes on their back. Now, though his company Urbanskills.net, he will cover both short-term situations ranging from 24 to 72 hours as well as long-term survival resulting from a grid-down situation or pandemic. Classes involve lecture, small-group activities, and individual pre-disaster planning exercises. It is designed to take students from drafting a personal, family, or business emergency plan to what implementation should look like and the critical survival gear needed along the way.
“Classes are heavy on practical skills and field-tested information that can be immediately applied to a participant's home and lifestyle,” explains Nester who began teaching survival courses in 1989 and has served as a consultant for the Travel Channel. “Through developing a self-reliant mindset, having essential survival gear, and learning a handful of critical skills, students learn how they can prevail in an urban crisis,” says Nester.
A few of the topics covered include off-grid medical issues, the 6 key areas of home preparation, water storage and purification methods, food recommendations and long-term storage issues, evacuation strategies, reuniting with family members, assembling a quality first-aid kit, preparing children for an emergency, sanitation and hygiene issues, disaster planning for businesses, vehicle considerations, and how to construct a personal Bail-Out Bag (BOB) for the home, office, and vehicle.
Most of the people who attend come from all walks of life, from concerned parents and business travelers to city managers and first-responders. Since his beginnings in 1989, Nester’s clients have included the National Weather Service, FAA, law enforcement personnel and military special operations units as well as being featured in numerous media outlets such as the Discovery Channel, New York Times, Backpacker, and Outside Magazine for whom he writes a monthly column.
Nester points out that, “Learning survival shouldn’t involve a fear-based approach and there won’t be any doom and gloom rhetoric in our classes. Urban survival training is meant to be empowering as student's plan for their specific region, acquire pertinent skills and cut through the gear-hype to find out what is really necessary to face a real-world emergency.”
The first class this Fall will be held in Phoenix on October 8, from 9 am to 5 pm. Classes take place nearly every month in major cities throughout the U.S. and are normally held at hotel conference centers within 30 miles of an airport. Cost is $125 and includes all instruction, a copy of Nester’s popular book Surviving A Disaster and a Family Evacuation Planning Manual.
