Boulder City HS first of nine ST™ 200 Hellas tracks to be completed

An hour after we were awarded the contract, we had crews on the ground

Boulder City High School athletes are now running on one of nine tracks installed in the Las Vegas Clark County School District by sports surfacing contractor, Hellas Construction. Hellas won the official bid by the county on June 24th, began construction within the same hour and went on to complete the project in record time of ten weeks.

“An hour after we were awarded the contract, we had crews on the ground,” said Bob Allison, Vice President of Hellas Track Operations. “The time frame was manageable due to the fact that we employ 12 fully equipped track crews and own all of our equipment, and could therefore move in and out quickly.”

The Sport Tracks 200® system offers an energy-returning surface, which provides a superior bio-mechanical response for athletes, while forming a resilient and hardwearing surface that is resistant to ultraviolet degradation, abrasion, shrinkage, mold, oils and chemicals. This system adds several coats of red EPDM rubber and structural spray to increase durability and protection.

The new tracks also offer an eco-friendly benefit with their recyclability characteristics. “For the nine Clark County tracks, we used close to a million pounds of recycled SBR rubber, which is equivalent to more than 11,526 recycled truck tires,” said Allison. Using recycled tires significantly reduces the amount of waste placed in landfills every year. The rubber made from tire shreds and bales is also cleaner and more efficient product.

Hellas is a national sports construction company, headquartered in Austin, Texas, with offices in Atlanta, San Diego and Salt Lake City. Notably, the suppliers of the Dallas Cowboy Stadium synthetic turf, Hellas most recently installed tracks for the University of Georgia as well as two Usain Bolt endorsed tracks in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana.

Hellas was chosen by the school district in late June to replace the existing latex track systems, according to Mikell Dale, Facilities Modernization Coordinator IV for the Clark County School District Facilities Division. Dale said there were some unforeseen site challenges discovered at a few of the schools once the old surfaces had been removed. “Hellas immediately addressed those issues and made sure the job was done right.”

The Clark County School District is the fifth largest school district in the United States and has won various awards including the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for its 2010-2011 comprehensive annual budget report.
