This campaign is precisely why Naked Wines have just been named Innovator of the Year at the recent IWC awards.

Unknown Argentine winemaker Oscar Biondolillo has sold over £80k worth of wine in 24 hours following a crowd-powered tasting hosted by Naked Wines and trade body Wines of Argentina.

Oscar’s Aguma Reserva Tannat 2009 was selected from over 120 wines looking for UK representation, after three hours of customer tasting and voting.

Oscar, who’s been looking to break into the UK since he opened his own winery in San Juan in 2003, was overwhelmed by the speed of the campaign:

“What a day. I’ve gone from no sales to £80k worth of sales in 24 hours! The feedback and support from Naked Wines’ customers has been incredible and I feel honoured that my wine was selected. It’s a refreshing way to do business and I hope to work with them for many years to come.”

Andrew Maidment, the UK Director of Wines of Argentina, added:

“This campaign is precisely why Naked Wines have just been named Innovator of the Year at the recent IWC awards and why we’ve teamed up with them. They have taken a long, slow process and offered talented, unknown winemakers a lightening-speed, risk-free route to market – and better still, they’ve invited their customers to be a part of it. The industry should sit up and take note, as we need more innovations like this.”

The competition, the brainchild of Naked Wines’ Founder Rowan Gormley, will be rolled out to other wine producing countries next year – with a planned $1million dollar prize for the overall winner.

NOTES ON NAKED WINES:

If Marmite sold wine online…

Naked Wines (http://www.nakedwines.com) is an upstart UK start-up that people either love OR hate.

Why people love us:

We have challenged an age-old industry stunted by snobbery, middle-men and protectionist laws.

  • We have over 62,000 customers who invest over £1million a month towards future orders
  • Which we use to fund independent winemakers looking to break into the UK
  • In return for exclusive wines at preferential prices
  • Which we pass back to our customers

Why people hate us:

We have challenged an age-old industry stunted by snobbery, middle-men and protectionist laws.

  • We don’t employ wine buyers; our customers help us select our wines
  • We don’t use stuffy, pretentious wine-speak; we use language that people understand
  • We don’t waste our money on glossy brochures; we do everything online
  • We remove the smoke and mirrors; customers can chat directly to winemakers on the website

What we’ve achieved to date:

Since launching the business in the depth of the recession in December 2008, we have:

  • Recruited over 200,000 customers, 62,000 of which invest over £1million a month
  • Helped 32 winemakers set up in business and break into the UK
  • Seen over 100% growth year-on-year
  • And we’re shipping an average of 10,000 bottles of wine a day

Who we are:

The business was founded by Rowan Gormley and twelve friends.

Rowan is a self-confessed failed accountant who previously launched Virgin Money and Virgin Wines.
