Great Neck, NY Matrimonial and family law firm Wisselman, Harounian & Associates is launching a complimentary Grandparents Legal Support Group for grandparents who want to stay involved in their grandchildren's lives but their contact with the grandchildren has been terminated.

Wisselman, Harounian & Associates, PC is launching a Grandparents Legal Support Group starting on September 21, 2011. The murder trial of Caylee Anthony has helped to bring to the forefront the challenge that some grandparents face when trying to help their grandchildren by staying involved in their lives.

George and Cindy Anthony, the grandparents of Caylee Anthony, will give their first interview following their daughter Casey Anthony’s acquittal on murder charges, to Dr. Phil McGraw on The Dr. Phil Show on September 12. McGraw said the interview was granted in exchange for a donation to Caylee’s Fund, a charity run by Caylee Anthony’s grandparents. The psychologist said the organization is “intending to focus on promoting processes to educate the public about – and advocate for grandparents’ rights” as reported by People Magazine.

There are many situations where grandparents contact with grandchildren is terminated. Losing visits can be the result of a bitter divorce where the parent with custody won’t let the parents of the ex-spouse visit with their grandchildren. There may be drugs or child abuse involved. Sometimes a parent dies, and the other parent moves on and starts a life with a new spouse and doesn’t feel the grandparents fit in anymore. The parent may be using the grandchildren as a pawn in their disagreements with the grandparents.

There are also instances where grandparents seek custody of their grandchildren because the parents are unfit or the children have been abandoned or neglected. This requires the grandparents to seek help within the legal system.

Wisselman, Harounian & Associates invites grandparents from the community to a meeting at our office to discuss the legal avenues that are available to them if they are not able to maintain a relationship with their grandchildren. It is an opportunity for grandparents to get their legal questions answered in a comfortable environment and to meet others in a similar situation. The first meeting will be held Sept 21 at 6:00pm and the next meeting will be October 19th at 6:00pm. There is no cost or legal commitment to attend these meetings, they are educational only. People interested in attending should RSVP at 516-773-8300 or via email at Sharyn(at)awjaw(dot)com.
