Descendant of Dr. John Jefferson Smallwood compiles his essential writings and speeches in an Xlibris release.

Before Dr. John Jefferson Smallwood became founder and president of an institution that would eventually educate over two thousand African American boys and girls during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he was known as an insightful, colored orator in New England during that era. In One Common Country for One Common People, author Mary E.C. Drew presents a compilation of this great man’s legacy.

From 1886 until his untimely death in 1912, Dr. Smallwood was a familiar face on the platform, giving lectures all throughout the United States and abroad on the American colored man. His speeches reflect his broader knowledge which allowed him to enter upon the agitation of temperance, labor and education – topics affecting all American citizens, both white and colored. In this book, Drew features several out of the two hundred and fifty speeches he delivered over the period of his career.

One Common Country for One Common People includes essential writings and speeches – the expressions that most truly synthesize and detail Dr. Smallwood’s thoughts and philosophical beliefs. Together, these many documents offer insight into the life and philosophy of a man who lived during a period of extreme racial tension in American history, and demonstrate how he overcame insurmountable odds to achieve the successes that he gained in such a short period of time.

Aside from Dr. Smallwood’s writings and speeches, the author also shares the story behind this orator who has inspired millions with his words. From his years of childhood to his career, Smallwood’s life is a reflection of a gift shared with others.
