"This is an exciting convention for fans or anyone in the business of cutting-edge technology, science and space flight" - Director of the Writers of the Future contest
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 22, 2011
It was 1934 when the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS) first opened its doors to fans of a new genre, “scientific fiction." Those doors are still open, and getting bigger – admitting such popular science fiction writers as Steven Barnes, Ray Bradbury, John DeChancie, David Gerrold, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Tim Powers, while in its formative years it had been visited by several of science fiction’s greats, such as Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard and A.E. van Vogt – making LASFS the world’s oldest and continuously-meeting science fiction and fantasy club.
LASFS will host LosCon 38, the club’s annual Los Angeles Regional Science Fantasy Convention on Thanksgiving weekend from Friday, November 25th – Sunday, November 27th at the Los Angeles Marriott Hotel (5855 W. Century Blvd., Los Angeles).
“Fans from Los Angeles to Timbuktu are invited,” said Arlene Satin, LASFS Convention Chairperson. “We are continuing this great tradition and share with all fans of science, science fiction and fantasy, exciting and cutting edge technologies that already exist or will exist in the future."
Several of today’s top writers and illustrators of science fiction and fantasy will also be on hand to speak to fans and autograph books. Discussion panels on the subjects of science, space technology - including flying cars, science fiction and fantasy writing and illustration, related movies and TV take place throughout the weekend.
"This is an exciting convention for fans or anyone in the business of cutting-edge technology, science and space flight.", Joni Labaqui, Director of the Writers of the Future contest said. "I also attend because many of the judges of the contest and many former winners of the contest are here, every year. It is always fun to sit in on the panels and find out what is happening with space flight, the latest rocket science or if you want to know what is happening with your favorite science fiction or fantasy writers. I also see it as a golden opportunity for movie and TV productions related to the genre to meet the great writers who imagine the wild and wonderful concepts that have given scientists over the years countless goals to achieve."
The guests of honor this year are: Writer - John DeChancie, Starrigger trilogy; Artist - Aldo Spadoni; Science - Astronaut Rick Searfoss, Colonel, USAF Retired; and Fan - John Hertz.
