Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that Baby Boomers are now the biggest losers in the jobs market. While unemployment has fallen in most age groups, it is rising rapidly amongst the over 50’s where there are currently 398,000 unemployed. In the last three months alone, unemployment in this age group has risen by a shocking 47,000. Dr. Ros Altmann, director general of Saga, has described unemployment among the over 50s as a “serious national issue”. Help is now at hand though as a team of entrepreneurial Boomers has created Boomer Business Builder, a membership club designed to help Boomers launch and develop a new business.

Our austere economic climate is creating redundancies on an unprecedented scale. Although the figures are daunting, Boomers are not giving up without a fight. With the option of taking a job at a lower salary or having no job at all, combined with the dwindling pensions faced by many, this most resilient of generations is defying the scrapheap and embarking on a new phase of their life, as business owners.

Boomers have had little support to date in their quest to start a business however. Recent governments have focused on getting the young into work whilst many of the private and public sector redundancies have aimed at the over 50’s.
