The Life Sciences Social Network Life-Sciences.net is a network for scientists and the community to discover and share scholary and popular content in biology, in the applied life sciences agriculture and forestry, in the earth sciences, in the environmental sciences, and in the health sciences.
The site was originally launched as Bio-Network.org in 2008. Currently, over 6,300 users monitor nearly 3,500 journals covering the life, earth and health sciences. They share ca. 1,000 new articles every day. Since new science content is discovered in real-time, the delay between original publication and appearance at Life-Sciences.net is not more than one day.
Most new articles are included in the site's Biology category which currently contains almost 472,000 entries. Contributions stem from ca. 1,000 scientific journals which publish articles in this field.
Life-Sciences.net's Geography category includes content from ca. 250 earth sciences journals and currently contains ca. 50,000 references.
The site's content is divided into "Digg-style" "Popular" and "Upcoming" sections. While content in the "Upcoming" section is rarely older than a few minutes, the "Popular" section contains articles submitted ca. 20-60 minutes ago. All articles can easily be bookmarked by using the AddThis Sharing buttons which include the increasingly popular Google+1 button.
Life-Sciences.net includes a search feature to retrieve specific titles or keywords from its' large database. Furthermore, it suggests up to ten related articles for each article selected. This helps compiling lists of references for literature retrieval purposes for authoring new articles.
The site invites users to stay updated with the latest research in biology, geography and in the applied life, earth and health sciences. Besides regularly visiting the site users are encouraged to subscribe to its feeds.
Life-Sciences.net maintains a Twitter account (@Life_Sciences_) which currently features 67,000 tweets and 950 followers. The Biology category is represented by Twitter's @BiologyMag whereas the Twitter account @GeographyMag reflects the site's Geography content.
