The modular Freedom of Movement Control Unit from MSI was selected to provide the operator control for all three variants of the Marine's Ground Based Operational Surveillance System.

Ultra Electronics Measurement Systems Inc. (MSI) received a $4.3 Million contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center for its Freedom of Movement Control Unit, FMCU™, in support of the Ground Based Operational Surveillance System, G-BOSS. G-BOSS is a Naval Sea Systems Command program providing integrated "beyond-the-fence" surveillance capability for the Marines with 3 variants including two vehicular towed trailers with Ground Control Station functionality and one variant as a fully portable tri-pod system.

The FMCU™ from MSI is a patented "game-style" fully ruggedized operator control unit providing highly concentrated and customizable functionality including trigger control making it ideal for ideal for portable and remote control of payloads and unmanned systems. The Freedom of Movement Control Unit offers G-BOSS operators the ability to control the electro-optic/infrared sensors included with each of the G-BOSS variants (light tripod, medium 30' trailer-mounted mast, and heavy 80' trailer-mounted tower) using a ruggedized hand controller that is very similar in form and function to the commonly used video gaming controller. For the heavy variant, operators may control two sensors simultaneously using two FMCUs, one for each sensor. The G-BOSS sensor suite includes a Star SAFIRE®* IIIFP camera, a ThermoVision®* 3000 camera with GPS, and a Man-portable Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar.

With an available modular LCD, the FMCU is easily configured for each variant and provides the Marines with the ability to use the identical control across all platforms with the integrated LCD for the portable tri-pod variant where the display is needed.

G-BOSS provides defensive capability as a Force Protection asset for Forward Operating Bases, Command Outposts, Battle Positions and Entry Control points; as well as offensive capability in the form of expeditionary situational awareness.
