Initial Involvement Includes Heart Walk Sponsorships And Participation In Educational Programming in Chicago and Twin Cities

Ergotron Inc., the global leader in ergonomic and wellness-enhancing mounting and mobility products, is proud to be joining the American Heart Association in its mission to “build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke,” and to contribute to its new “My Heart. My Life.” health, wellness and fitness platform.

Ergotron’s commitment to the cause includes sponsorship, participation and in-kind donations to Heart Walks, wellness symposiums and other educational events across the country. For each Heart Walk that Ergotron participates in, walking teams and other participating sponsors are being offered complimentary WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstations.

Studies have found that the physical activity associated with standing (rather than sitting) has a profound impact on the overall health of the individual. Often referred to as sitting disease, the long term impact of prolonged sitting (more than 6.5 hours a day) includes increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and early mortality. It is these dangers which led the American Cancer Society to conclude in their 2010 study: “Public health messages should include both being physically active and reducing time sitting.”

Ideally suited for individuals who sit in front of a computer for long periods of time, Ergotron’s WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstations are designed to allow the user the healthy option of switching between a seated and standing computing position whenever, and for as long as, they choose. Research has established that the simple act of standing increases blood flow, metabolic rates and caloric burn. Standing more will also improve focus, energy and productivity and will help reduce the stiffness, discomfort and aches commonly associated with computing and long periods of sitting.

“The health of American knowledge workers today is at a tipping point. Sedentary work routines and physical inactivity are taking a rising toll on health,” said Joel Hazzard, president and CEO of Ergotron. “Research has established that long periods of sitting can have dangerous consequences, contributing to heart disease and early mortality rates. This is why we believe in and will continue to contribute to the American Heart Association’s campaign to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans ‘20 percent by 2020.’”

Ergotron’s involvement begins with sponsorship and participation in the four 2011 Chicago area Heart Walks (September 23-25; October 1). It will then expand to a partnership with the American Heart Association—in the Twin Cities to sponsor their Fall “Culture of Wellness” Symposium (November 10), followed by sponsorship and participation in the Spring 2012 Twin Cities Heart Walk.

“Healthy activity doesn’t have to come in the form of a gym membership. We need to attack the problem where it hits many of us the most, our workspaces,’” said Hazzard. “The fact is that a strong correlation exists between long periods of sitting and elevated health risks. Ergotron’s WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstations are designed to combat the harmful effects induced by sedentary work routines. Through this, we’re committed to creating healthier, more active work routines—by getting people out of their chairs and improving their cardiovascular health—and to a long, successful partnership with the American Heart Association.”
