Mesothelioma is a real problem, affecting real people, that requires a real solution

On Monday, September 26th, nearly 1,000 individuals will acknowledge this day by organizing awareness and fundraising events by participating in various runs and walks, by requesting official proclamations from their local governments, and by asking their local media to cover this rarely-mentioned cancer.

This umbrella event, which started in 2004 by volunteers of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation), is meant to bring attention to this dangerous, but rarely discussed, cancer. Information about related events can be found on the Meso Foundation’s website.

Mesothelioma, which is known to be caused by exposure to asbestos, is extremely aggressive and difficult to treat, yet few resources are available to patients once diagnosed. A search of the internet will generally yield thousands of legal marketing websites, leaving patients confused. Only the Meso Foundation provides immediate medical expertise to every individual, one-on-one guidance through the challenges posed by mesothelioma, and a community of peers to rely on for personal support.

“Once patients and families find the Meso Foundation, they experience relief and renewed hope,” says Meso Foundation’s executive director Kathy Wiedemer.

In addition to providing expert medical consultations and support for patients and their families to help them understand and successfully manage their mesothelioma diagnosis, the Meso Foundation is also the leading conduit and funder of the most promising, peer-reviewed, mesothelioma research.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day is very important because it helps us communicate to the general public that mesothelioma is not just an advertising term on billboards and late night cable TV networks, but that it is a real problem, affecting real people, that requires a real solution. Most importantly, through the efforts of Meso Awareness Day, we want to ensure that every patient diagnosed with mesothelioma knows how to find the Meso Foundation and the help that he or she needs and deserves,” added Ms. Wiedemer.

The Meso Foundation is the leading organization dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma as a life-ending cancer by funding peer-reviewed mesothelioma research, providing patient support services and education, and advocating Congress for increased federal funding for research. Mesothelioma funding, per death, has historically been extremely low, and even as recently as 2007, the NCI reported that mesothelioma receives as little as 9 times less funding than other cancers. The Meso Foundation was founded in 2000 to address this imbalance and since then has independently funded over $7.1 million in peer-reviewed mesothelioma research. More information is available at
