ASIBELUA, the luxury label from internationally renowned designer Fati Asibelua made its widely anticipated debut at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York.

Fati Asibelua, the celebrated founder of Momo, debuted her new international luxury label ASIBELUA on the global runway at IMG Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week last Thursday. Redesigning African fashion on the global stage, ASIBELUA opened the runway show Arise ‘Made in Africa’, a collective show featuring seven of the world’s most celebrated designers.
Momo’s founder Fati Asibelua unveiled what was regarded as a stunning collection with a strong, distinctive African signature that featured bold colours and ready-to-wear pieces that instantly appeal worldwide.
Attendees at New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week marveled at the collection calling it, “Sophisticated and mature,” “cosmopolitan and bold,” and stating “the collection thrives in contrasts.”
The AISBEUA collection harnesses a unique vocabulary of colorful prints and tie-dyes hand-crafted on luxury silks that have become the designer’s emblem of African exuberance.
The spring / summer collection’s inspiration comes from designer Fati Asibelua’s personal interpretation of an “African Kaleidoscope”. Working with her love of pattern and textiles, Asibelua calls the collection a contemporary urban African mix of tribal crafts and futuristic streamlined shapes. The bold use of contrasting textures and exuberant prints create vibrant burst in simple garment shapes and designs that highlight the designer’s love of improvisation.
This season, a graphic Mod feel has inspired the designer to introduce black and white silk checks to the vibrant mix. A mood for jazz perhaps, but the tribal beat of wax print inspired patterns and the designer’s beloved tie-dye mixes are a major source of inspiration and feature in her collection.
“The street energy of Africa is really special for me,” said designer Fati Asibleua. “But I also love London, which is like a second home to me. My goal is to build ASIBELUA into a truly luxury African fashion label with genuine international appeal.”
Spring/Summer 2012 sees the launch of ASIBELUA’s third collection. With stocklists already in the UK and Europe, the collection now travels to Paris to exhibit at MeMy Mode from 30th September until 3rd October.
