MVDC challenges small businesses and large businesses alike to proudly post military discounts in their window, on their own website or list discounts at no cost on MVDC.
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) September 29, 2011
The Military and Veterans Discount Center, a free web resource with over 233,000 businesses locally and nationally that have military discounts, released its annual rankings of top states for military discounts. There are 22 states with legislation or pending legislation to add veteran designations on driver’s licenses and two states that are providing veteran ID cards at the county level that will enable counties to provide veterans discounts. With patriotism at an all-time high, MVDC was prompted to examine how states stack up on a per capita basis when it comes to providing discounts.
MVDC examined its database of over 233,000 reported businesses that have military discounts and cross referenced this data with census data to get a per capita picture of which states are going above and beyond for the troops. The top 10 include:
3. North Dakota
7. South Dakota
8. Rhode Island
10. New Hampshire
“The smaller states have done an excellent job in promoting military and veteran discounts” says Terrence Thomas, founder of MVDC. “We found an innovative grass roots movement in Salina, Kansas called the Patriot Business Program run by Melissa McCoy. Local businesses were encouraged to pledge military discounts and place logos in their windows to help spread the word to active duty personnel and veterans. Cities in Rhode Island, Arkansas, Colorado and New York also have similar programs”.
According to Mr. Thomas, the red state-blue state analysis was done initially for fun as it was initially thought to be an even split, but it was not even close. 16 out the top 25 states in discounts per capita voted Republican in the 2008 election and 19 out of the bottom 25 states voted Democratic in the 2008 election. “This probably doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, other than we need to get more businesses in the lower 25 states to promote their discounts. I am sure they have them, they just haven’t told anyone about them” added Thomas.
MVDC challenges small businesses and large businesses alike to proudly post military discounts in their window, on their own website or they can add their discounts at no cost on MVDC.
Mr. Thomas adds “When we get to 1 million discounts listed, not only will we help millions of military and veteran families, but we will also once and for all have enough data to settle the score between the red and blue states.”
