“While the day is a sad one in regards to the wounds mesothelioma has inflicted, the hope it inspires for thousands of people affected by the disease is invaluable,” Shrader said.

Monday is Mesothelioma Awareness Day, which was started by the Meso Foundation in 2004. The purpose of the occasion is to increase awareness of the seldom-discussed fatal cancer by partnering with local governments and media outlets to shed light on the disease and its victims.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of asbestos cancer that most frequently targets the outer lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma can also affect other parts of the body such as the abdominal cavity and the lining of the heart. Approximately 3,000 cases of asbestos-related cancers such as mesothelioma are diagnosed annually. Many individuals do not begin to experience the symptoms of mesothelioma for up to 40 years after their exposure to asbestos.

“Mesothelioma Awareness Day is very important because it helps us communicate to the general public that mesothelioma is not just an advertising term on billboards and late night cable TV networks, but that it is a real problem, affecting real people, that requires a real solution,” Kathy Wiedemer, executive director of Meso Foundation, said in a release.

Wiedemer added, “Most importantly, through the efforts of Meso Awareness Day, we want to ensure that every patient diagnosed with mesothelioma knows how to find the Meso Foundation and the help that he or she needs and deserves.”

The publicity generated from Mesothelioma Awareness Day promotes awareness of the disease and provides hope for an eventual cure, Shrader & Associates firm partner Justin Shrader said.

“While the day is a sad one in regards to the wounds mesothelioma has inflicted, the hope it inspires for thousands of people affected by the disease is invaluable,” Shrader said.
