Last year’s BP oil spill was predicted to lower the vacation market for many years after the catastrophe, but just one year later, summertime booking numbers for Gulf Shores, Alabama vacation rentals were high, with rental numbers even surpassing those of vacation times before the oil spill. Brett/Robinson Real Estate and Development reported high interest in the company’s condos in Orange Beach throughout the busy travel season.

Bill Brett stated, “We’re about as full as we can possibly be.” Not only did vacationers return this year in abundance, but July proved to be Brett/Robinson’s best month ever.

When the oil leak occurred last year and began to wash ashore in popular vacation destinations, some travelers changed their travel plans to avoid regions affected by the oil. This led to a drop in bookings for companies that owned or managed properties throughout the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach region.

Even tourist areas on the East Coast that were not directly or severely impacted by the oil spill saw lower numbers, simply because travelers feared wasting their money on a vacation that would be tainted by oil or its after effects. This trend seems to be turning around.

While tourism industry analysts feared the worst for companies that invested strongly in real estate throughout the Gulf Shores region, Brett/Robinson is bouncing back strongly after what could have been a doomsday scenario. Spring Break and the Hangout Music Festival early in the year drew vacationers, who quickly reported that the damages from the oil spill were long gone.
