The mother-daughter super-team that owns and operates Lulus.com, a designer-inspired eCommerce site that has exploded on the scene, experienced more than 800-percent growth in the last three years.

Debra Cannon and Colleen Winter started LuLu*s as a traditional brick-and-mortar operation in 1996 in Chico, Calif. and in 2005, began an online presence with Lulus.com to complement the store. Positive customer response to the Web site created quite the stir and in just a few years, they had hundreds of thousands of customers – all without any outside capital.

Because of their exponential growth – they went from $1.3 million in revenue in 2007 to a whopping $12.1 million in 2010 – they decided it was time to focus their efforts online only. In 2009, they sold the storefront and began a full-blown Web attack. During this time, the number of employees more than doubled. Organic growth, financial independence and savvy business decisions were made to handle the challenges of a growing infrastructure.

“We are very pleased that our online presence has been met with love from our loyal customer base and success in the financial sector,” Winter said. “Of course, working as a family team with a fantastic set of employees is the most rewarding part of our jobs.”

With more than 50,000 Facebook followers, more than 17,000 Twitter followers, 315,000 e-mail subscribers and almost 3 million monthly visitors to the Web site, LuLu*s only continues to grow. The company was featured in Inc. magazine’s 2011 list of Top 5000 companies, placing 423 overall and 11th in the retail market. The LuLu*s products have been featured in fashion and lifestyle publications, including Glamour, Cosmopolitan, the New York Post, InStyle, and O, The Oprah Magazine.

Cannon and Winter are always on the cutting edge, which helps them stay on top. They are now working on a one-of-a-kind music compilation, collaborating with up-and-coming bands, as a “thank you” for their customers. This goes along with the ladies’ belief that excellent customer service is crucial. Soon they will debut a new site with added features, including a community page that encourages social interaction with daily contests, exciting customer rewards and enhanced product features. Also, look for more designs with the exclusive LuLu*s label.

Running a successful online business isn’t just for the ladies in this family. Winter’s husband also runs the successful TruckerDeluxe.com, a website for men’s fashions.
