3D Biomatrix, a leader in the development of three dimensional (3D) cell culture products, has released a white paper highlighting the use of its Perfecta3D(TM) Hanging Drop Plates to generate 3D spheroids and test them against anti-cancer drugs. The paper informs the reader of different methods of forming spheroids, and introduces the Hanging Drop Plates. The unique structure and attributes of the plates, which include reproducibility of spheroids, compatibility with high throughput screening instruments, and maintenance of humidity within the plates, are described.
The white paper continues to describe published experiments (Analyst, 2011, 136, 417-620) that demonstrate using of the Hanging Drop Plates to form reproducible spheroids from several cell types and testing anti-cancer drugs against the spheroids. The white paper illustrates how the toxicity profile of drugs will vary greatly depending on if they are tested in two dimensional (2D) or 3D cultures. The mechanisms of many drugs that depend on the 3D structure of human tissues may not be represented in 2D formats.
