Baker Strategy Group (BSG) completed a study on Michigan public elementary schools that involved feedback from over 300 parents. The full report can be downloaded at http://www.thrivingschools.org.

BSG collaborated with Survey Sampling International, a global leader survey sampling, to conduct online interviews with a panel of over 300 parents who had at least one child attend a Michigan public school during the 2010-2011 school year. Parents were asked to grade their experience with the school on 75 key measures. The full report can be downloaded at http://www.thrivingschools.org.

David Baker, founder of BSG, said that this study comes at a critical time for public schools in Michigan. “Public schools face clear challenges today,” notes Baker. “State and local budgets have been cut, the lagging economy is putting financial pressure on many families, and the heated debate on school reform is taking center stage once again. Meanwhile, federal mandates and expectations have generated increased workloads for school administrators. In short, our public schools are being called to do more with less.”

“Public school administrators provide a wonderful service to our children,” Baker continues. “The schools open their doors to children of all aptitudes, nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and economic backgrounds to form a learning community. The results of this study can help point to key areas where administrators can focus their attention to boost parent satisfaction with the schools.”

BSG’s data analytics identified 7 key Drivers of success. These Drivers are areas that, if improved, would have the greatest impact on parent satisfaction:
1. Providing up-to-date resources
2. Maintaining high academic standards
3. Accommodating students of all levels
4. Attending to individual learning styles
5. Creating a feeling of school community
6. Fostering healthy student-to-student relationships
7. Being available for meeting with parents or students

“Knowing where to improve is one thing,” says Baker. “Taking specific action to make significant improvement in key areas is an entirely different matter. We hope that these initial results will inspire administrators for the 2011-2012 school year as they continue to build thriving school communities. Thank you, public school administrators, for making it happen.”
