OCENS, Inc. a leading provider of satellite data services for the maritime industry is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Terrafin fishing and ocean data through its WeatherNet ‘on-demand’ weather service. Available data includes sea surface temperature (SST), cloud free SST, chlorophyll, altimetry (sea surface height anomalies), and ocean currents for waters around much of North and Central America plus Hawaii.

Terrafin is a trend-setting provider of ocean data using 1 km high-resolution data from NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. Terrafin pulls multiple passes of satellite data each day covering Alaska, the entire continental US coastline, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific coasts of Mexico and Central America. Staff professionals then analyze the information before processing the raw data to enhance quality and reliability, creating regional and sub-regional charts, and mapping these charts with lat/lon and bathymetry information. OCENS then adds interactive map layers that provide dynamic feedback on position, bearing and range before applying custom compression routines that reduce the size of the files for affordable relay over satellite connections. The end result is a set of custom charts offering unique insights into ocean conditions which can be used by fishermen to improve catch success and decrease search costs.

Because of WeatherNet’s unique capacity to work efficiently through low or high bandwidth connections, the Terrafin data, and the multiple daily updates which Terrafin produces, are affordably accessible to fishermen at-sea with any MSAT ‘push-to-talk’, Iridium, Inmarsat, or Globalstar satellite phone. “We are very excited about this collaboration”, says Mark Freeberg, President of OCENS. “Terrafin data is some of the finest fishing data in the world and something our fishing customers asked us to add to the WeatherNet engine. With that now in place, WeatherNet can deliver to these fishermen the very latest Terrafin information anytime, anywhere, even when using slow or low bandwidth satellite phones.”

About Terrafin, Inc.
Since 1999 Terrafin has been providing computer enhanced sea surface temperature (SST) and Chlorophyll charts for anglers and divers. ‘Blended’ cloud-free SST charts were added in 2009 with altimetry (sea surface height anomaly) and current charts included in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Coverage extends over the entire Continental U.S. coastline, Hawaii, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific coast of Central America. Multiple charts are produced each day for most regions and product types.
