The Jacksonville Sharks announce former Florida Gator quarterback Chris Leak has been added to the 2012 roster on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Chris Leak (6’0, 210 lbs) returns to the Sunshine State for his rookie season in the Arena Football League with the Jacksonville Sharks.
Leak was a four-year starter at quarterback for the University of Florida, winning a national championship as a senior. During his storied college career, Leak completed over 61 percent of his passes for over 11,200 yards and 88 touchdowns, also added 13 rushing touchdowns.
Leak was named MVP of the BCS NationalChampionship game in a 41-14 rout of Ohio State when he connected on 25 of 36 passes for over 200 yards and a touchdown to former Shark Dallas Baker. “I am blessed and excited to be a part of an organization that’s committed to excellence and winning championships,” stated Sharks quarterback Chris Leak. “This is a great opportunity to be home and closer to my family. I look forward to playing in Jacksonville with support of greatest fans in the AFL.”
“I am very excited to add Chris to our Sharks family,” said Sharks’ Head Coach Les Moss He was a player I originally targeted before our first season, but was under contract in Canada and could not join us. Chris has never played the indoor game, but his accuracy and skill sets are what attracted him to us and are the requirements to be a top quarterback in the Arena Football League.”
Leak often found himself listed on the ALL-SEC Team and was the fourth Gator to be named Freshman of the Year. Leak was listed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll each year he attended Florida and was a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, also known as the “Academic Heisman” for college football players. He graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and was a keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony. Upon graduating and winning the 2006 national championship, Leak was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears. He was later released after seeing limited action and found a temporary home in the Canadian Football League from 2008 to 2011, including stops with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Leak was a part of the 2009 Grey Cup Championship team with the Alouettes.
