In To Be the King of Diamonds (published by Trafford Publishing), a new memoir by teacher and coach Walter Ryan Adams, the author recounts his junior high and high school years playing baseball and learning about life, death and loss. To Be the King of Diamonds is a very personal remembrance of the friends who made Adams the man he is today.

An Excerpt from the book:

"I knew who Peter was; his brother had looked just like him. He wanted to tell me, again, how much that letter meant to him and his family. He said they were pulling for us. They were pulling for me. With a grin I shook Peter’s hand and just knew how the game the next day was going to end. I had been given yet another reminder of what was going on here. It was not a matter of if. It was only a matter of time."

Adams’ story will be instantly relatable to many high school readers. He admits his difficulties fitting in, his health issues that stopped him from competing in basketball and football, and his difficult decision to change schools in eighth-grade to get access to a better baseball program. What follows is a memory of pain and triumph.

Even as Adams’ baseball career is improving, his personal life is not. The death of a friend – perhaps the first peer to have a positive effect on Adams’ self-esteem – nearly derails him but he regains his balance only to have another friend killed. Soon after, a favored mentor from his childhood dies and Adams is forced to confront these serious losses. Baseball becomes his only outlet, and through his excelling at baseball he comes to realize the powerful lessons he’s learned about himself and his relationships.
