Our goal is to create unique and valuable tablet experiences for interacting with corporate content and these apps are just the start. Alfresco aims to be the industry leading enterprise file system for tablets and smartphones.

Alfresco, the open platform for social content management, today announced the availability of Alfresco Mobile - free iOS apps for the iPad and iPhone. Available in the Apple App Store today, Alfresco’s iOS apps extend the Alfresco experience to iOS devices and give corporate users direct access to all of their critical business content on the go. Alfresco Mobile works seamlessly across the entire Alfresco product portfolio, including the latest versions of Alfresco Team, Enterprise and Community. All current Alfresco users can download the free apps to access their content directly from an iPhone or iPad.

According to Apple, the tablet computer has been tested or deployed at 80% of Fortune 100 companies in 2011. As tablet adoption continues to increase, employees will demand the ability to choose their own devices and software, while enterprises, within the bounds of security and compliance requirements, increasingly want to support tools that empower their employees to be more productive.

Today, more than ever, device ownership falls into the hands of employees while application and content ownership is determined by the need for secure access and content policies between the organization and it’s employees.

With Alfresco Mobile, employees can work more efficiently in a mobile work environment and enterprise IT managers can feel confident that business information is kept secure, no matter their level of security needs. The apps leverage the Alfresco platform built on the same robust and secure technology that has been deployed in nearly 2000 enterprises, including global brands like Home Depot, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Michelin, The National Health Service, and the New York Philharmonic.

“The tablet has already become the third screen for today’s knowledge workers and is quickly replacing the notebook and printed reports in business meetings across the globe,” said Todd Barr, CMO of Alfresco. “Our goal is to create unique and valuable tablet experiences for interacting with corporate content and these apps are just the start. Alfresco aims to be the industry leading enterprise file system for tablets and smartphones.”

While the new iOS apps provide an easy-to-use and easy-to-deploy solution for Alfresco customers, the core platform will continue to support open standards such as WebDAV, so that customers can build their own apps or leverage third party apps depending on what works best for their business. As cloud and mobile solutions mature and evolve, Alfresco will continue to support open standards that make it easier for customers to choose the right solution and tools for their unique needs.

Alfresco called on Alfresco Platinum partner Zia Consulting to help develop the new mobile application. "We've been out for a while now with our Fresh Docs mobile platform application", said Mike Mahon, CEO of Zia, "and we've seen a tremendous amount of excitement from our clients in this space. This has been a great opportunity for us to leverage our mobile development experience and to work with the Alfresco team to get Alfresco Mobile to market."

Coinciding with the release of their mobile apps, Alfresco also announced the hire of former Project Manager at Apple, Marc Dubresson, to lead a new mobile division within Alfresco and guide future mobile product development. At Apple, Marc was responsible for the release of the first Apple iPad app, Pages, which remains the top grossing iPad app today. The company noted the importance of investing in top talent to build mobile solutions that meet the needs of businesses that are leveraging mobile and cloud technology in new ways, every day.

The iPad and iPhone apps deliver an extensive set of features for sharing and collaboration on the go, including:

  •     View documents, presentations and media files or download for offline access
  •     Take photos on your iPhone and upload them directly to Alfresco
