Childhood Asthma is Closely Linked to Omega-3 in Maternal Diet, According to a Recent Study, Says Nutri-Med Logic Corp.

Nutri-Med Logic Crop says that a thorough search of all evidence-based medicine reviews, for randomized controlled trials on effects of an Omega-3 diet during pregnancy and/or lactation, has established a definite correlation between the Omega-3 in a mother’s diet and a reduced risk of Asthma in her offspring.

Nutri-Med Logic Corp: A recent study, in part, is blaming lack of Omega-3 in maternal diet as a cause for offspring Asthmatic reactions.

The study points to two immune signals, called IL-13 and IFN-Gamma, as the predominant cause of Asthma in an undeveloped or fully developed immune system. These two signals are associated with a group of immune cells called T-cells and up-to-now mostly implicated in adult asthma. The body’s ability to regulate these immune cells, in part, is linked to the diet. Since the diet of fetus or newborn is the same as the maternal diet, then more emphasize is needed for the maternal diet.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute defines hypersensitivity of the immune system (atopic allergy) as the strongest risk factor in asthma. Allergic reactions are immune responses, which at times are unnecessary.

Immune system, sometimes erroneously, considers a proteins, carbohydrate or a harmless substance as a threat and thoroughly over-reacts. At other times, the immune response is much stronger and more prolonged than required. The ability of a particular group of immune cells to self-regulate themselves is closely dependent on their membrane polyunsaturated fatty acid ratio, more specifically, the ratio of two polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6) both of which are transported to the body through diet. Development of the immune system of the fetus/new born during pregnancy and lactation is a crucial factor for the following lifelong immune reactions. If the developing immune system is incapable of self-regulating the preexisting T-cells' over-reactivity (a predominant cause of asthma), then unnecessary allergic reactions will follow, most likely for life. (3)

According to studies, incorporation of the EPA and DHA, two Omega-3 fatty acids, into T-cells has resulted in a more intelligent (moderate) reaction and since allergies are determined early in life or even ante-natally, Omega-3 diet should receive more importance in early life (during pregnancy and lactation) than later in life, as it relates to the prevention of allergic diseases. Both in laboratory and animal studies, incorporation of Omega-3 has moderated the production of IFN-gamma, one of the two inflammatory signals responsible in Asthma. (5)

Additionally, according to several landmark studies, breast milk of mothers who supplemented with fish oil during pregnancy showed higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids than those of controls, as well as, the circulating levels of IL-13 (the other immune inflammatory signal) in their offspring was 1/3 less than those not supplementing. While this recent study only encompassed the newborn but other studies involving very young children also has found Omega-3 diet very beneficial for asthmatics, to-wit, examination of 308 children ages 4–6 revealed that red blood cell EPA and DHA were lower in children with allergic reactions and a Randomized Control Trial of 60 children with moderate persistent asthma, diet consisting of 1 gm/day of Omega-3 for a period of 6 weeks resulted in significant improvement in Pulmonary Function. In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp agrees with the recent study relating to the maternal diet and Omega-3 but adds that since the study highlighted Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), two Omega-3 fatty acids, then a Balanced Omega-3, having 50% EPA, 50% DHA, without a doubt, should be the Omega-3 of choice for those looking for an Omega-3 diet.
