Columbus, OH (PRWEB) September 30, 2011
OhioHealth welcomes bariatric surgeon Dr. Tom Sonnanstine to Fresh Start Bariatrics at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
“I believe bariatric surgery is more than just actual surgery,” said Dr. Sonnanstine. “It requires intensive involvement, education and counseling. Fresh Start Bariatrics is a multi-disciplinary program, and that fits well with what I believe in and have been involved in.”
Dr. Sonnanstine has performed over 2,000 bariatric operations, including over 1,200 laparoscopic gastric bypass surgeries and over 800 adjustable gastric band surgeries. He has taught bariatric surgery methods and techniques across the country. He was most recently the Medical Director of a bariatric surgery program in Kentucky.
“As a bariatric surgeon, I have an opportunity to take care of a number of problems patients are experiencing,” said Dr. Sonnanstine. “It is the only subset of surgery where you can change a person’s quality of life, life expectancy, get rid of medical problems and prevent medical problems from developing later on.”
“I ensure bariatric surgery patients are prepared and educated before surgery, and I perform safe, high-quality procedures. I am available after surgery for follow up and encouragement for long-term success.”
Dr. Sonnanstine attended medical school at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and is originally from Marion, Ohio. He completed his general surgery residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital and completed a minimally invasive/bariatric surgery fellowship at Tufts University/New England Medical Center.
