The Belize tourism industry is reporting a new trend in travel – exotic holidays.

In line with the recent surge in destination weddings, where couples opt to hold their nuptials in exotic locations and turn the wedding into a holiday for family and friends, more and more people and families are choosing to spend traditional holidays in exotic locations, and according to managers of The Lodge at Chaa Creek, Thanksgiving and Christmas bookings in Belize are on the rise.

“We’re seeing an interesting phenomenon lately; a trend where families combine traditional holidays with an overseas vacation,” marketing advisor Larry Waight said recently. “When you consider the effort it takes these days to bring everyone together to celebrate a holiday, what with time and money so precious, people want to make the most of their holiday time together and turn it into something truly special."

“And with some of the all-inclusive holiday vacation packages on offer, it often turns out to be a very affordable way to go. With the Chaa Creek all-inclusive Thanksgiving Holiday Package, for example, everything, accommodation, meals, activities and transfers are included in one set price, so there’s no hidden costs or extra outlays. When you consider how much it costs these days to put on a proper family celebration at home, it makes sense to combine everything into an incredible vacation experience everyone will remember forever,” Waight said.

Chaa Creek owner and GM Lucy Fleming said she is also surprised with the growing interest in the Thanksgiving package, which is an extension of her own family’s Belizean Thanksgivings.

“Our first years were filled with challenges and a very steep learning curve as we tried to establish a farm on the banks of the Macal River, surviving on what we could grow, catch, and sell in the markets. By the time the first November rolled around, it began to look as if we were actually going to make it, and the stories of the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving really resonated, so we scraped together what we had, invited friends from the neighbouring farms who had been so good to us, and threw a Thanksgiving celebration that was a huge hit," said Fleming.

“Thirty years on, we still have so much to be thankful for and the tradition now includes a much larger number of guests and definitely a bit more luxury,” she said. “The growing trend of more and more people joining us each year is a very pleasant surprise,” she said.

Chaa Creek’s affordable Thanksgiving Vacation Package is an all-inclusive minimum three day mix of fine food, activities and relaxation available throughout November. In addition to exquisite meals, the package includes beautiful cottage accommodation, guided bird walks, visits to the Butterfly Farm, Natural History Museum and Rainforest Medicine Trail, canoeing on the Macal River, enjoying the new swimming pool and hiking the vast network of pristine jungle trails while exploring ancient Maya temple sites. A professional Hilltop Spa is also available for healthy pampering.

“It’s always a rich melange of incredible food, but any excess is made guilt free by all the healthy activities. Perhaps that’s another reason behind this trend – you get fit while you get full,” Ms Fleming said.
