Hayes, Inc., in anticipation of the implementation of new CPT codes for molecular diagnostic testing, surveyed its clients recently to identify genetic testing topics of highest interest.
“We asked our clients to review a list of 49 topics and disorders and identify their highest priority topics in five categories: cancer, pharmacogenetics, single gene disorders, tissue typing, and other,” says Dr. Diane Allingham-Hawkins, Director of the Hayes Genetic Test Evaluation Program. “From the > 100 responses that we received, we sorted the topics from highest to lowest priority. These data enable us to prioritize our evidence reviews and concentrate first on these high-priority topics. We are in the process of completing high-level reviews of all topics by the end of 2011, and full health technology assessment reports will be prepared in a timely fashion, again with priority given to the most requested topics.”
Hayes Genetic Test Evaluation reports are evidence-based health technology assessments of genetic tests across a range of conditions and applications. Each report provides a clear, objective view of the science behind a specific genetic test, the clinical evidence supporting the test, and the use of the test in clinical practice. These reports can help to guide decisions about whether a hospital should develop or contract for specific genetic tests, based on the clinical value of the test, appropriate patient selection criteria, and the likelihood of reimbursement for each type of test. The reports also can support the development of defensible, transparent coverage policies that are based on evidence of analytical validity, clinical validity, and clinical utility of the test, as well as appropriate patient selection criteria.
Hayes, Inc. is dedicated to helping health plans, hospitals, and government programs transform healthcare delivery and improve outcomes through the integration of evidence into decision making and policy development. Hayes’ unbiased information enables managed care organizations and government programs to develop defensible and transparent coverage policies, care management protocols, and best practice guidelines. Hospitals and healthcare systems rely on Hayes as a resource for strategic initiatives focused on safely reducing the cost of care while improving quality and clinical outcomes. We believe strongly that evidence-based, clinically sound processes will improve both the quality and the cost effectiveness of healthcare delivery in the United States and drive performance improvement under healthcare reform.
