I went as an educator looking to enhance my experiences with the things I teach my students, and I came back enriched professionally and personally.

Whether looking for the opportunity to do hands-on conservation work or inspiration for a more fully engaged classroom, EcoTeach has created an itinerary just for teachers.

Priced at $995, this eight-day journey will introduce educators to the ecological wonders of Costa Rica, from searching for new species of insects to patrolling Caribbean beaches for nesting turtles and more.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience a signature EcoTeach trip, but without the students. Highlights will include patrolling Caribbean beaches in search of nesting and hatching turtles, and working with researchers at Veragua Rainforest Research & Adventure Park. Visiting an organic farm and a rural school, participants will experience “authentic” Costa Rica meeting colorful local farmers, teachers and students. Other adventures will include ziplining over the rain forest canopy, rafting down the Sarapiqui River and looking out for red hot lava at Arenal Volcano.

There is one set departure June 29 - July 6, 2011, though custom dates are also available at the same price for private groups of eight or more. The complete itinerary is available online. Packed with educational experiences, EcoTeach expeditions often qualify for travel grants and professional development credit; contact EcoTeach for details.

“This was the trip of a lifetime for me,” said Cindy Lee, a Golden Apple award winner and seventh grade science teacher from New Mexico who joined the 2010 teacher trip. “I went as an educator looking to enhance my experiences with the things I teach my students, and I came back enriched professionally and personally.”

Normally priced at $1,495, this trip is only for educators. The $995 discounted cost – more than 30% off – includes accommodations, meals, a bilingual naturalist guide, private in-country transportation, airport transfers, and post-departure travel insurance. It does not include international airfare, tips, exit tax (currently $26) or expenses of a personal nature. Each traveler is invited to bring one adult companion for the same discounted price.
