“In today’s economy, the quality of nation’s education is one of the biggest predictors of a nation’s success. It is what will determine whether the American Dream survives," Obama said.

Last Thursday President Obama worked to get Republicans to accept his plan to help underperforming schools be successful. The plan was put together by the president and senators from both the Republican and Democrat parties.
The overall goal of the education reform is to change the way federal funding is distributed to schools. Instead of determining budgets mostly on test scores, fund disbursement would more heavily depend on teacher achievement.
Originally, the law was put into place by former President George W. Bush. It took heat from both Republicans and Democrats because schools were repeatedly failing to meet standards and the emphasis on test scores was too strong.
The plan would enforce things like the removal of ineffective teachers and merit pay. If the plan is put into action, it will be easier to close schools that don’t perform as well as they should.
Next year, the federal government plans to make education one of a few areas that will receive more spending. The government plans to spend more than $77 billion on education on things like teacher training, grant programs, and new science and math teachers.
At a recent event in Hillsboro, Oregon at Intel, Obama stressed the importance of education. He said he believes “in today’s economy, the quality of nation’s education is one of the biggest predictors of a nation’s success. It is what will determine whether the American Dream survives.”

Although Republicans have attempted to begin similar plans, many believe Republican law makers will be hesitant to pass a proposal from the president. Others think that Democrats may oppose the plan because it may alienate teachers unions.
Some teachers groups are optimistic about the plan because it brings more money to the education system and classrooms. However, some teachers groups are less optimistic because they worry about heightened competition for federal funding.
