Intermarkets Selects Winner for Journalism Scholarship

Fourth annual Intermarkets scholarship goes to Fairfax, VA resident.

Intermarkets, Inc., a privately held advertising sales management services firm, awards Katherine Dempsey the $5,000 Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

“I’m grateful to Intermarkets for selecting me to receive this scholarship. When I found out, I was excited and surprised because I knew it was very competitive,” said Ms. Dempsey.

A graduate of James W. Robinson Secondary School, in Fairfax, VA, Ms. Dempsey plans to attend the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Illinois.

This summer Ms. Dempsey is working as a freelance journalist for the Fairfax Station and Burke editions of Patch (, a community-specific news and information platform.

"We’re pleased to award our scholarship to Katherine Dempsey, a talented and focused writer and accomplished student,” said Kevin Lucido, Chief Executive Officer of Intermarkets. “It’s wonderful to see such energy concentrated on responsible journalism.”

The scholarship is open only to students who attend a Virginia high school. Intermarkets Chief Executive Officer Kevin Lucido created the Scholarship to recognize an outstanding graduating senior in Virginia who understands and promotes the importance of non-biased journalism in the United States media.

Applicants were required to submit an essay that reviewed a current, published article and explain why it was biased and how it should be changed, a description of extracurricular activities, academic accomplishments, and writing samples.

The Northern Virginia Community Foundation manages the annual Scholarship.
