The Pillar® Procedure, which is a relatively new in-office medical technique, is being touted among snoring specialists as a cure for snoring in many patients. As more snorers are being treated with this procedure worldwide, positive results lasting many years are being realized.

The Pillar Procedure is a minimally invasive, simple and safe treatment for snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea and snoring caused by the fluttering of the soft palate while asleep. It's a relatively painless procedure that can be performed in a doctor's office in about 20 minutes, using only local anesthetic.

The Pillar Procedure involves stiffening the soft palate and offering structural support, reducing the vibration of the tissue that is causing the snoring. During the procedure, three small polyester implants are placed into the soft palate and over time, the implants, together with the body’s natural fibrotic response, provide support to the soft palate.

So far more than 30,000 people have been treated with the procedure, according to Pillar manufacturer, Medtronics. The snoring specialists at Manhattan Snoring and Sleep Center, co-directors David Volpi, M.D., F.A.C.S. and Eric Cohen, M.D. are experts in the technique, and have been using the procedure to treat qualified patients since it was introduced. “We have treated hundreds of patients who suffered from snoring with Pillar implants,” said Dr. Volpi. “We have found that afterwards their snoring is cured or reduced significantly in most of our patients. It has relieved serious daytime sleep deprivation symptoms that their snoring was causing—from a decrease in motor skills and the inability to concentrate, to memory loss and depression.”

Doctors Volpi and Cohen were recently featured discussing the procedure on the February 1st edition of ABC’s Good Morning America. In reporter Tanya Rivero’s segment, “Snoring Surgery Is One Couple's Dream Come True,” the doctors demonstrate how it works, and explain the lifestyle improvements of those who have been cured.

The Manhattan Snoring and Sleep Center is a leading provider of the Pillar Procedure in New York City, and has successfully cured patients suffering from snoring disorders and sleep apnea for decades.
