I’ve been discovering so many beautiful toys that I know children and parents will love, but my problem has been space. Now I can finally add all these wonderful toys that I’ve been dreaming about introducing at Bella Luna Toys.

Bella Luna Toys, a premiere online retailer of Waldorf toys, is expanding its catalog after moving into a spacious new warehouse. The larger facility, in the company’s hometown of Rockland, Maine, will allow Bella Luna Toys to stock a much larger inventory of beautiful natural and wooden toys, inspired by Waldorf education, that an increasing number of eco-conscious young families are seeking.

Waldorf toys are inspired by the educational insights of Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf education. Purposely simple and made of natural materials such as wood, silk, cotton or wool, the toys are designed to nourish a young child's senses and to encourage imaginative and creative play.

“In my travels and conversations with toymakers and craftspeople from around the world,” says Bella Luna Toys owner and former Waldorf kindergarten teacher Sarah Baldwin, “I’ve been discovering so many beautiful toys that I know children and parents will love, but my problem has been space. Now I can finally add all these wonderful toys that I’ve been dreaming about introducing at Bella Luna Toys.”

Among the new additions is a pair of charming Waldorf Wooden Doll Houses made in Canada, offered online in the U.S. exclusively at Bella Luna Toys through a new partnership with Twig Studio, Canada. Another recent introduction that has excited both Waldorf teachers and parents are unique Waldorf Rocker Boards that are commonly found in Waldorf early childhood classrooms, but until now have not been widely available to the public.

“Ask any Waldorf teacher what the most valuable toy in her classroom is, and she will most likely tell you ‘the rocker boards!’” says Baldwin. “A curved piece of wood about three feet long, this simple toy can be played with in so many ways. It easily becomes a boat, a cradle, a slide, or a bridge. Two, three or four rocker boards together allow even more possibilities. But the best part is that children are developing their vestibular system and sense of balance when they play with them.”

Baldwin, who has a master’s degree in Waldorf early childhood education, is the author of Nurturing Children and Families, a pioneering text used by Waldorf educators working with toddlers. She brings her 15 years’ experience as a Waldorf teacher to selecting a unique collection of Waldorf toys to inspire a child’s imagination and that are beautiful to behold.

The new warehouse and headquarters of Bella Luna Toys is located at 3 Gordon Drive, Rockland, Maine 04858. Visitors to Rockland are welcome to stop by the company, meet Sarah and purchase directly from the warehouse.
